Rickson Gracie BJJ Blackbelt Luiz Claudio LCCT Seminar at Rise Up Martial Arts in Madison
Luiz Claudio and Thiago came to Rise Up Martial Art to demonstrate Brazilian jiu jitsu techniques and principles to our students. They are both Rickson Gracie BJJ blackbelts who promoted Rise Up co-owner Thales Blaso to the rank of second degree blackbelt, and the Luiz Claudio Combat Team (LCCT) enjoys great success in competitive jiu jitsu, and is centralized in Chicago.
The BJJ principles demonstrated by Luiz Claudio
Here is a review of the principles Luiz Claudio demonstrated during the seminar. Luiz used the side control and mount positions to demonstrate how transitions can be taken advantage of, and how fighting with strength from an inferior position is a losing proposition. Using strength in a static position is a bad choice until the opponent tries to advance their position.
Leverage vs. Strength!
If an opponent has the advantage of leverage, no amount of strength is worth exerting until they raise their base to transition.
Frame, not push while under pressure
Do not waste your strength by pushing with your muscles against their weight, instead position your bones to frame and maintain space without exerting yourself, and bide your time until the opponent moves.
Give what your opponent will take
If the opponent will inevitably take a better position regardless of your exertion, don’t waste your energy resisting, but rather give them what they want in order to make them hungry and confident, and be prepared to off-balance them when they take the opportunity you’ve given them.
Attack at the opportune time
When you give your opponent what they want, they will be abundantly confident, and overreach or go for more. This behavior by the opponent often results in increased speed and a high base that is easier to topple. As they are being toppled, there are opportunities to reverse the position or exploit extraordinary advantage.

Below is a video of Thiago’s warmup drill and some solid jiu jitsu advice! It’s amazing how such complexity can be distilled into such clarity! Congratulations to Thiago as well on his newborn son!! We are so happy for you!
